"From Darkness to Sunrise" City Orienteering Competition 2018

The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong (SBHK) has been providing suicide prevention services for over 50 years. We understand how difficult it is for someone with emotional distress. They may feel trapped in darkness, depressed, or even hopeless in life, and give up their lives by committing suicide. Therefore, SBHK organize "From Darkness to Sunrise" City Orienteering Competition since 2014, with the aim of promoting the message "Cherish Life, Live Positive".

The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong - Life Education Centre.

Participants have to choose the best route through the terrain and check-in at various checkpoints. Different skills would be tested in different situations. In addition to problem-solving skills and endurance on the individual level, team communication and collaboration skills would also be assessed. Just as real life, we need partners to overcome different challenges that come across our path. Finally, participants can appreciate the beauty of nature at the finish line: sunrise that symbolizes hopefulness in our life.

This is a score-orienteering competition. Routes are categorized by 3-time limit, Professional 9 hours, Sport 6 hours and Beginner 4 hours. The score carried by each control is determined by its difficulty. Team returns to the finishing line within the time limit with the highest scores will be the winner. When multiple teams got the same score, the first team cross the finishing line will be the winner.

The number of controls reduces along with each category’s time limit; 9-hours consists of the largest number of controls, while 4-hours made up of the least controls. Teams do not need to reach every control.

For example, if you join the Sport 6 hours mixed category, you and your teammate have to check-in different controls shown on the competition map to obtain scores and reach the finish line within 6 hours. You should deliberate with your teammates on your team tactics, so you can obtain the highest possible score within the time limit.
